Accelerated Reader:

AR is a computerized reading motivation program.  Accelerated Reader tests are purchased for specific titles; after a child has read an AR book, he or she may take a test on the title, earning points based on the length and complexity of the book and the number of correct answers given. Accelerated Reader is a valued part of our instructional program and while we wish to recognize the students for achievement, the best reward should be their satisfaction with having read and comprehended an excellent piece of literature!

Many classroom teachers have their own reading incentive programs. If you have questions about what is happening with AR in your child's classroom, please contact his or her teacher.

Island Reading Journey and Cosmic Reading Journey:

Island Reading Journey and Cosmic Reading Journey are two new computerized reading motivation programs purchased last year to encourage students to read. Much like AR, students read a book and take a test on the title, earning "planets" or "islands." The programs also have other activities for titles read including crossword puzzles, word finds, and essays.

Many classroom teachers have their own reading incentive programs. If you have questions about what is happening with Reading Journey in your child's classroom, please contact his or her teacher.

Read-a-Thon:

In 2005, DFES participated in the 1st Annual Read-a-Thon! We had so much fun!

The students and teachers decided that we could read 20,000 books in 4 weeks. If we reached our goal, our principal, Mrs. Lominack and our assistant principal, Dr. Rood agreed to eat BUGS! Well, we made our goal and they ate those bugs! Click on their names to watch the video of  their "meal"  that night!
We read LOTS of books. For 1st annual Read-a-Thon, we read a total of 21,420 books and raised $1, 063.

The 2nd Annual Read-a-Thon was January 6, 2006! As a school, we read 273,000 minutes and we raised $999.45. We reached our goal, which meant that Mrs. Lominack and Dr. Rood rapped for us at Family Literacy Night.
Check it out!
